AI agents have placed several hundred orders on DoorDash in total, about the same as John in Flat 34a.
The AI agentic ordering revolution is, statistically speaking, not yet upon us.
DoorDash CEO Tony Xu confirmed on Thursday that third-party agents, including Meta's Muse, have placed a combined "several hundred orders in total" through the platform. DoorDash delivered 3.2 billion orders worldwide in 2025. So the agents are responsible for roughly the same share of business as a single moderately hungry family in a mid-sized American suburb.
Xu was polite about it. "You never want to fight gravity," he said, while also noting, in the same breath, that you "do not want to be delusional." Both halves of that sentence are doing different work.
The actual picture from user research is that people will let agents track a price, but not pull a trigger. Single-use credit cards, double-checked checkouts, a general reluctance to let software autonomously spend money on their behalf. Sensible, really. Humans have been burned by autofill before, and that was only their own email address.
DoorDash is building its own AI ordering tools regardless, which is the correct call. The gravity is real. The timeline just keeps getting quietly revised.
